About Us

And J (Angie & Jack) Studio is a Melbourne-based, ongoing furniture practice focused on designing and building custom timber pieces. The studio is run by Jack, with Angie (my adopted kelpie) usually nearby.

Each piece is made to order, with an emphasis on simple, considered design and a hands-on approach to making. Where possible, I work with recycled or sustainably sourced timber. These materials often carry natural variation (grain, knots, and markings) which are part of what makes each piece unique.

This site is a portfolio of pieces made to date, and will be updated with future limited collections. If something resonates, or you’d like to discuss a custom piece, feel free to get in touch.

About the process

Reach Out
Send through whatever you’ve got; sketches, screenshots, or inspo pics. Include any details you know (size, use, timber, colour/tone), and I’ll take it from there.

Design & Quote
I’ll shape your ideas into a clear direction and come back with a design and quote covering dimensions, materials, timing, and cost. There’s always room to tweak things until it feels right.

Materials
Timber is sourced locally. I spend a fair bit of time at Urban Salvage in Spotswood. Depending on the size or requirements of the piece, additional hardware might be needed (like steel c-channels for large tables or threaded inserts for easy disassembly).

In the Workshop
Pieces are made in Abbotsford at The Shed, a furniture and woodworking workshop. Angie occasionally supervises.

Timing
Once everything is signed off, most pieces take around 8 to 16 weeks. This can vary depending on the design, timber availability, and other projects being worked on.

Delivery
When a piece is complete, we’ll organise delivery or collection, whatever works best. I’ll be in touch to coordinate timing and make sure it gets to you safely.

Ongoing Care
Timber moves and changes over time. I’ll provide simple care notes to help you look after the piece day-to-day to make sure it lasts.

Finally, a Note on Price
Solid hardwood timber is not comparable to most retail furniture. Pieces marketed as “real timber” are often just veneered, rather than solid hardwood. Quality Australian hardwoods, finished to Dressed All Round (DAR) standard, can exceed $70 per linear metre (a simple four seater table can include up to 15 metres of timber!).
